NWT Canoe Adventure by F.R. Gorga | ||||
Founded by the Hudsons
Bay Co., Fort Smith, NWT is a small town (pop. about 2,500) on the Slave
River at the downstream end of 14 miles of rapids. Cargo was brought by
steamer from the Arctic Ocean and portaged around the rapids, starting in
Fort Smith, before continuing on by boat to its final destination.
There is a large colony of white pelicans that spend the summer breeding and fishing the rapids at Fort Smith. |
